SUSHMA SWARAJ : NOT JUST A LEADER BUT A LEGACY

A golden chapter in the history of Indian politics, Sushma Swaraj a magnificent leader from Bhartiya Janta Party, expired on August 6, 2019. The minister of external affairs is reported to have died of a heart failure followed by cardiac arrest. She took her last breaths at AIIMS Delhi. According to reports, attempts by the doctors to revive Swaraj continued for more than 70 mins after her death, but remained futile. She had became inactive in politics and kept away from contesting 2019 Lok Sabha elections due to ailinghealth .

 

INDIA’s BEST LOVED POLITICIAN

 

A former supreme court lawyer Swaraj is famed to be the second woman who held the position after Indira Gandhi. According to US’s wall street journal Sushma is known to be India’s  Best loved Politician.

She is also the youngest person to have served as cabinet minister of state of  Haryana at just 25 years of age, by acquiring the Ambala Cantonment Seat. 

 

By joining Akhil Bhartitya Vidhyarthi Parishad in 1970s she began her political career. In the summer months of April of 1990s Swaraj got elected as a Rajya Sabha Member  and continued until !996 when she got elected from South Delhi Constituency to 11th Lok Sabha. 

 

She was also reelected to 12th Lok Sabha again from South Delhi constituency in March of 1998, this time for a second term. During Vajpayee headed BJP rule she became Union cabinet minister for information and broadcasting. Her duties also included additional responsibilities of Ministry of Telecommunication. It was during this reign that she took many important decisions with an everlasting impact. 

 

NOTABLE DECISIONS

 

One of such decisions was the declaration of film production as a industry. Now it was the Indian Film Industry which was now eligible for any and all types of bank finances. Starting a community radio at universities as well as institutions was one of her another important initiatives.

During her reign as minister of Foreign affairs in Swaraj raised the issue of Baluchistan in United nations UNGA session. She had accused Pakistan of excessively violating human rights in areas of Baluchistan as well as POK ( Pak occupied Kashmir)

She setup and encouraged development of pillars of Medical science in India- The 6 AIIMS centre.

 

TIES WITH EASTERN COUNTRIES

 

She developed the 3C formula for reinforcing ties with the Asian countries as per the Act east policy. As per the formula the 3cs are commerce, culture and connectivity. According to her policy the north eastern states of India will be the core of policy, as the development of these states will not also lead to improvement of tourism and infrastructure but alsofacilitate movement from other South east Asiannations.

 

One of the remarkable achievements of her political career was the mature as well as diplomatic resolutionof the Doklam issue without any conflicts bringing the India- China face off to an end and establishing mutual comfort and understanding within the two countries.

 

A LEADER WIHT A HEART OF GOLD

 

Not just a respected and loved political leader, Swaraj was a human with a heart of gold, having helped innumerable people within the nation and abroad on humanitarian grounds. She along with her team was known to have rescued more than 90,000 distressed Indians from various parts of the world in a span of four years. What is  incredible that the people in distress would approach her not just through formal channels but through social media, messages and letters and Swaraj would not only help them but also communicate and respond as if she was there friend and family.
